Why did independence from Spain have little effect on the lives of most people living in Central America?

The vast majority of the population, made up of mestizos, mulattoes, and indigenous peoples experienced little change in their daily lives. The power remained in the hands of wealthy landowners (most of whom belonged to the criollo elite) rather than being widely distributed among all citizens as many had hoped.
