From Capulin Volcano's Summit, You Can See Four States
Atop Capulin Volcano National Monument in northeastern New Mexico (elevation 8,182 ft / 2,494 m), the 360° view spans:
- New Mexico — the volcano itself, surrounding plains, distant Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
- Colorado — Rockies' front range (Spanish Peaks, Sangres) ~60 mi north.
- Oklahoma — High Plains stretching east ~40 mi to border.
- Texas — Llano Estacado south/southeast ~50 mi to border.
Why the View Is So Expansive
- Capulin is a cinder cone rising ~1,300 ft above the High Plains—no nearby peaks block sightlines.
- Atmospheric clarity in the dry, high-elevation air extends visibility to 100+ miles on clear days.
- The summit crater rim trail (1 mi loop) offers unobstructed panoramas in all directions.
Bonus Sights
- Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field: 100+ volcanic features (cones, flows, mesas).
- Santa Fe Trail ruts visible on plains below.
- Pronghorn, mule deer, raptors often spotted from above.
Visit Tip
Drive the 2-mi paved road to the summit (no RVs/trailers). Best light: morning (Colorado peaks) or late afternoon (New Mexico plains). Free with NPS pass; $20/vehicle otherwise.
