Significant Gulfs of Europe

1. Gulf of Bothnia

• Location: Northern Baltic Sea, between Finland (east) and Sweden (west)
• Character: Brackish (low salinity), freezes in winter, archipelagos
• Significance: Timber/ore shipping, shipbuilding, tourism (kayaking, cruises), Kvarken UNESCO site (land uplift)
• Major Ports: Luleå, Skellefteå, Umeå (Sweden); Oulu, Kemi, Tornio (Finland)

2. Gulf of Biscay (Bay of Biscay)

• Location: Northeast Atlantic, between France (east) and Spain (south)
• Character: Deep (4,735 m max), rough seas, strong currents, upwelling → rich fisheries
• Significance: Historic trade route, naval battles, offshore energy, surfing (Hossegor, Mundaka)
• Major Ports: Bordeaux, La Rochelle, Bayonne (France); Bilbao, Santander, Gijón (Spain)
