Jewish Life in Modern Germany: Thriving Community, Ongoing Vigilance

Yes, Jews live freely and securely in modern Germany. The community numbers ~100,000–120,000 (core) / ~225,000 (enlarged, including non-halachic), making it Europe's third-largest after France and UK.

Historical Context

• Pre-1933: 525,000 Jews in Germany
• Holocaust: ~165,000 German Jews murdered; most fled
• Post-1945: <5,000 remained; rebuilt slowly
• 1990s–present: Massive growth from Former Soviet Union immigration (~200,000 arrived)

Current Reality

• Legal equality: Basic Law (Art. 3, 4) guarantees religious freedom, non-discrimination
• State support: Central Council of Jews in Germany (ZdJ) is recognized corporation under public law; receives federal/state funding for communities, security, education
• Institutions: 100+ congregations, rabbinical seminaries (Berlin, Potsdam), Jewish schools, museums (Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt), hospitals, welfare
• Culture: Jewish Film Festival, Jewish Culture Days, vibrant intellectual life

Persistent Challenges

• Antisemitism: 2,480 recorded incidents (2023, RIAS) — verbal, online, physical; far-right, Islamist, left-wing sources
• Security: All Jewish institutions have police protection, guards, fortified entrances
• Demographics: Aging, assimilation, intermarriage; FSU immigrants often secular
• Memory culture: Strong, but debates over "Schlussstrich" (drawing a line), Israel criticism vs. antisemitism

Government Action

• Federal Commissioner for Jewish Life and Fight against Antisemitism (Felix Klein)
• Strict hate speech laws (Volksverhetzung §130 StGB); Holocaust denial criminal
• Bundestag resolution (2019): BDS = antisemitic
• Enhanced security funding (€22M+ annually for Jewish institutions)

Germany's special historical responsibility translates into robust legal protection and institutional support. Jews participate fully in public life—politics, academia, arts, business—while the society confronts its past and present challenges.
