How Germany Was Created: From Tribes to Nation-State
A 1,000-Year Journey
- East Francia / Kingdom of the Germans (9th c.) – Treaty of Verdun (843) splits Charlemagne's empire. Henry the Fowler (919) first non-Frankish king.
- Holy Roman Empire (962–1806) – Otto I crowned Emperor. Loose feudal federation of 300+ states. Not a nation-state.
- Reformation & 30 Years' War (1517–1648) – Religious fragmentation; Peace of Westphalia cements princely sovereignty.
- Rise of Prussia & Austria (18th c.) – Dualism. Frederick the Great, Maria Theresa.
- Napoleonic Dissolution (1806) – HRE ends. Confederation of the Rhine (French client).
- Congress of Vienna (1815) – German Confederation (39 states), Austrian presidency.
- 1848 Revolutions – Frankfurt Parliament fails to unify.
- Bismarck's Wars (1864–1871) – Schleswig, Austro-Prussian, Franco-Prussian. North German Confederation (1867) → German Empire (1871) proclaimed at Versailles. Prussia-dominated, federal.
- Weimar Republic (1919–1933) – Post-WWI democracy.
- Nazi Germany (1933–1945) – Totalitarian, genocidal, catastrophic war.
- Division (1949–1990) – FRG (West) & GDR (East). Cold War frontline.
- Reunification (1990) – Federal Republic of Germany absorbs GDR. 16 states, parliamentary democracy, EU anchor.
Germany's creation was not inevitable—it resulted from Prussian militarism, Bismarck's Realpolitik, war, and finally democratic choice.
