When did Bucharest become the capital of Romania?

Bucharest became the capital of Romania on December 23, 1861, when Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza united the historic provinces of Wallachia and Moldavia into a single state. Prior to this, Bucharest was the capital of Wallachia, while Iași was the capital of Moldavia.
