What did Chaucer do in Italy?
Chaucer is believed to have traveled to Italy twice, most likely in the period between 1360 and 1385. It is possible that those journeys provided the inspiration for some of the stories in The Canterbury Tales, such as the "Clerk's Tale", "Pardoner's Tale", and "Wife of Bath's Tale". While in Italy, Chaucer is thought to have stayed in Genoa and Florence, and he may have studied the works of Dante, Boccaccio, and Petrarch.
