Key Farming Regions of the Netherlands

Intensive Agriculture Across Five Core Areas

The Netherlands (41,500 km²) is the world's #2 agricultural exporter by value. Five regions dominate:

1. Green Heart (Groene Hart)

Randstad's green core (between Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague). Dairy, vegetables, floriculture on peat/clay. Multifunctional: farming + recreation + water storage.

2. Flevoland

Reclaimed from Zuiderzee (1950s–60s). Vast rectilinear fields: potatoes, sugar beets, onions, cereals, seed potatoes. Highly mechanized, GPS-guided.

3. Zeeland

Southwest islands/peninsulas. Marine clay soils + mild climate → seed potatoes, onions, Brussels sprouts, fruit (apples, pears), oysters/mussels (aquaculture).

4. Groningen (North)

Heavy clay (wadden). Seed potatoes, sugar beets, grain, dairy. Large-scale arable; gas extraction historically funded infrastructure.

5. Limburg (Southeast)

Loess soils, rolling hills. Fruit (apples, pears, cherries), asparagus, vegetables, pigs, poultry. Glasshouse horticulture (Venlo) — tomatoes, peppers, flowers.

Cross-Cutting Themes

  • Precision farming (drones, sensors, variable-rate).
  • Circular agriculture (manure processing, residue valorization).
  • Nitrogen crisis → transition to lower-emission systems.
