Why does Antarctica have no capital cities?
Antarctica does not have any permanent residents, so there is no need for a capital city. The continent is governed by the Antarctic Treaty, which was signed in 1959 and has been ratified by 54 countries. The treaty prohibits any country from claiming sovereignty over any part of Antarctica, and it also prohibits any military activity on the continent. There are a number of research stations on Antarctica, but these are not permanent settlements.
