Austria-Hungary responded to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by issuing an ultimatum to Serbia on July 23, 1914. The ultimatum contained 10 demands, including that Serbia must:
* Punish those responsible for the assassination.
* Apologize publicly to Austria-Hungary.
* Dissolve the Serbian nationalist organization Narodna Odbrana.
* Remove anti-Austrian propaganda from Serbian textbooks and media.
* Allow Austrian police to investigate the assassination on Serbian territory.
Serbia was given 48 hours to comply with the ultimatum. If it failed to do so, Austria-Hungary would take military action.
Serbian Response
Serbia mobilized its military and agreed to some of the demands in the ultimatum. However, it rejected the demand that Austrian police be allowed to investigate the assassination on Serbian territory. Serbia argued that this would be a violation of its sovereignty.
Austrian Declaration of War
On July 28, 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. This marked the beginning of World War I.
