Tours in Nettuno, Italy

Nettuno is situated on the western coast of Italy, just south of Rome. The city made its mark on modern history by being the landing place of the Allied Forces during World War II. A cemetery housing the remains of American soldiers who died in the fight to liberate Rome is open for touring year round. Nettuno also offers a medieval village and the Villa Borghese which attract tourists from all over the world.
  1. Borgo Medievale

    • The Borgo Medievale, or "medieval village", of Nettuno is located near the coast line. It is home to the ancient castle of Neptune, the Palazzo Doria Pamphili, and the Church of St. John the Baptist and the Evangelist. The lay out of the village is well-suited for personal walking tours, although you may visit the local cultural office to inquire about guided tour information.

    The Allied Landings Museum

    • On January 22, 1944 the Allied Forces of WWII landed in Nettuno, marching their way to Rome. The liberation of Rome was announced on June 4, 1944 and displaced families were able to return to their homes. A museum was built on the site of their landing containing memorabilia from the era including uniforms, war correspondence and other mementos. The museum is open for touring during daytime hours.

    The American Cemetery

    • The American Cemetery was created two days after the allies landed in Nettuno as a temporary cemetery. The cemetery is still open today, containing 7,862 soldiers killed during World War II. In 1956 the site became permanent. The cemetery is opened every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the exception of Christmas and New Year's Day. A staff member is on site at the Visitor's Building to escort guests to graves and memorials.

    Villa Borghese

    • The Villa Borghese is an Italian National Monument.

Villa Borghese is a national monument site near the coast. In 1978 Steno Borghese transferred the ownership of the villa, and a portion of the park surrounding it, to the City of Nettuno. The villa and park are open to the public with scheduled tours of the villa happening throughout the day. One of the owners, Marcantonio III, dedicated the property with the following lines, "Walk where you want, pick what you want...Everything here is prepared for the enjoyment of foreigners, even before the owner."
