Why did Ming China demand that Europeans pay for goods with gold or silver?

The Ming dynasty of China did not demand that European traders pay for goods with gold or silver. In fact, the Ming government generally restricted private foreign trade and preferred to conduct trade with other countries through official tribute missions. During the early Ming period, the government accepted various goods as payment for Chinese goods, including horses, camels, precious stones, and spices.
