Were the irish considered white in 19th century?

In the 19th century, the Irish were not considered white in the United States. They were viewed as inferior to whites and subject to discrimination. This was due in part to their different religion (they were predominantly Catholic), as well as their ethnicity and the perception that they were not as advanced or civilized as whites.
