Dublin: Name Origin from 'Dubh Linn' – The Black Pool

The name Dublin derives from the Irish Dubh Linn, meaning "black pool" (or "dark pool"). It refers to a deep, peat-stained tidal pool where the River Poddle met the River Liffey near present-day Dublin Castle.

The Viking settlers who established a longphort (ship fortress) there in the 9th century called it Dyflin, which evolved into the modern English "Dublin." The Irish name for the city is Baile Átha Cliath ("town of the hurdled ford"), referencing a different crossing point. The "black pool" itself was filled in during the 18th century, but the name endures as a testament to the city's Norse-Gaelic origins.
