What is the meaning of Dublin?

Dublin comes from the Irish language words Duibhlinn, which means "black pool". The name is derived from the dark, peaty water of the River Poddle, which flows underground through Dublin city centre. The Vikings who founded the city in the 9th century called it Dyflin, which was later anglicised to Dublin.
