Is a law degree from Ireland recognized in Malaysia?

The recognition of foreign law degrees in Malaysia is governed by the Legal Profession Act 1976 (LPA) and the administration is carried out by the Malaysian Bar Council. The LPA has a specific provision to accommodate recognition for the foreign law degree holders.

A foreign law degree may be recognised by the Malaysian Bar Council if the degree holder meets the following criteria:

- The degree is recognised as a first degree in law in the country in which it was awarded;

- The degree is equivalent to the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree of the University of London; and

- The holder of the degree has completed a period of practical training in the country in which the degree was awarded.

The practical training must be substantial and must have given the holder sufficient knowledge and experience of the law. The Bar Council may also require the holder of a foreign law degree to sit for a qualifying examination before being admitted to the Bar of Malaysia.

A person with an Irish law degree may apply to the Malaysian Bar Council for recognition of their law degree. The Bar Council will assess the degree and determine whether it meets the criteria for recognition. If the degree is recognized, the applicant may be admitted to the Bar of Malaysia and practice law in Malaysia.
