Who used to own Iceland?

Iceland used to be a part of the Danish kingdom, beginning with the rule of Olaf Tryggvason in the year 999. Denmark gradually gained more control over the island until it became a formal Danish colony in the 13th century. Iceland remained under Danish rule for centuries, until it gained its independence on June 17, 1944.
