The 1964 Irish Proof 2/6 coin is a highly sought after coin by Irish collectors. Only a very limited amount were minted and the price has been increasing steadily over the past few years. There is a lot of confusion over the mintage of this coin and the number actually produced may never be known.
This commemorative set of 4 proof coins were issued to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Irish Mint which opened on 17 August 1939. The mint was opened by Eamon De Valera, head of the Irish government, and was then located at the Phoenix Park, Dublin. It later moved to Sandyford Industrial Estate, Dublin. The mint was closed on May 30, 1988, and has since been privatized and is now located at Ballycoolin Industrial Estate, Dublin 15.
