San Diego's 109 Neighborhoods: A Patchwork of Coastal and Urban Communities

The City of San Diego officially recognizes 109 neighborhoods, each with distinct character, history, and microclimate. Some of the most well-known include:

  • La Jolla – Upscale coastal "jewel" with coves, seals, UCSD.
  • Pacific Beach / Mission Beach – Lively boardwalk, bars, belmont park.
  • Ocean Beach – Bohemian, dog-friendly, pier, sunset cliffs.
  • Point Loma – Peninsula with Cabrillo Monument, submarines, tide pools.
  • Coronado – Island city (technically separate municipality) with Hotel del Coronado.
  • Del Mar / Solana Beach / Encinitas / Carlsbad – North County coastal gems (some are separate cities).

Beyond the Coast

Inland neighborhoods like North Park (arts, craft beer), South Park (historic homes), Hillcrest (LGBTQ+ hub), University City (UTC mall, biotech), and Mira Mesa (diverse, family-oriented) showcase San Diego's urban diversity.

Neighborhood boundaries are used for planning, policing, and community identity—but many residents identify more with broader areas (e.g., "North County," "East County," "Downtown").
