The name Texas derives from the Caddo word "tejas", meaning "friend" or "ally".
Spanish explorers in the 16th century applied it to the Hasinai people of East Texas. The name later extended to the entire region—the Spanish province, the Republic of Texas, and finally the U.S. state upon admission in 1845.
