If you're dreaming of sand and surf, Guadalajara is not the destination. As the capital of Jalisco and Mexico's second-largest city, Guadalajara sits inland, at 1,566 meters (5,138 ft) above sea level, roughly 300 km (185 miles) from the nearest Pacific coastline.
Instead, Mexico's world-famous beach destinations are found along its coasts:
Guadalajara offers a different allure: colonial architecture, mariachi, tequila (from the nearby town of Tequila), birria, and a vibrant arts scene. It's a cultural capital, not a beach town. Plan a few days there, then fly 1–2 hours to the coast for the best of both worlds.
