Why are there landmines in Ecuador?
Ecuador has one of the most serious problems with antipersonnel mines in Latin America. It is estimated that there are between 7-10 million mines buried across the country, the majority of which were planted during the 1995 Cenepa War between Ecuador and Peru, and many of which are still active. The mines vary widely in type and origin.
