Fishing in Huatulco, Mexico

Located in the Southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, Huatulco offers anglers unspoiled fishing areas on the Pacific Ocean. Rather than just a single city, Huatulco is actually a series of nine bays that stretch for 22 miles. It was originally a small beach and fishing village, but it is now an international fishing destination because of its warm northerly currents and drift-net-free tropical waters.
  1. Types of Fish

    • Huatulco has very warm coastal waters, as well as offshore waters bordered by the four-mile-deep Middle America Trench. This trench is characterized by underwater turbulence that has high food production to attract game fish to the area. The most prominent types of fish found in Huatulco are sailfish, swordfish and several types of marlin, including black, striped and blue marlin. Other fish found in its waters include yellowfin tuna, dolphin fish, dorado, Sierra mackerel, jacks, Pacific cubera, amberjack, roosterfish, groupers, red snapper and snooks.

    Fishing Seasons

    • Some types of fish can be found year-round, and they include swordfish, sailfish and dorado. The winter months, between December and March, are the best times to catch yellowfin tuna and mahi mahi. Black marlin are available between November and May, with August as their peak month. Blue marlin are available between April and September, while striped marlin are present in March and April. Roosterfish and red snapper peak between April and August, and amberjack and Spanish mackerel are available between October and March. Snook have two main seasons, and are typically only available between May and June, as well as August through November.

    Offshore and Inshore

    • Inshore fishing can be productive, as the local jungle river runoffs attract a variety of fish species, such as snook, roosterfish, yellowfin tuna and dorado. Just off the bays and mainland, large blue and black marlin can be found. Most Huatulco offshore fishing begins within a mile of the beach, because the continental shelf has many steep drop offs. The main types of offshore fish are sailfish, marlin, mahi mahi, jacks and red snapper.

    Fishing Boats and Charters

    • Huatulco is less developed than other Mexican travel destinations, but there are several, fully-equipped fishing charters available. Most take advantage of fishing hot spots, such as two miles west of Cacaluta Island and Tangolunda Bay, which is close to the main resort area. Most fishing boats are docked at Santa Cruz Marina, which is just minutes from the main hotel strip.

    Accommodations

    • Tourist development in Huatulco began in the late-1980s, and the area now offers a wide variety of accommodation options. The main hotel area is situated between the Santa Cruz, Chahue and Tangolunda bays. It is near an international airport and is surrounded by natural jungle and beach settings.
