"Transjordanian Palestine" Does Not Exist—Clarifying Transjordan/Jordan
There is no region called "Transjordanian Palestine." The term conflates two distinct historical-geographic concepts:
Transjordan / East Bank
- Refers to the territory east of the Jordan River.
- Became the Emirate of Transjordan (1921) under British mandate.
- Independent as the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (1946).
Palestine / West Bank
- Refers to territory west of the Jordan River (including Jerusalem).
- Under British Mandate (1920–1948); later divided (Israel, West Bank, Gaza).
Population of Jordan (East Bank)
- Majority: Jordanian Arabs (many of Palestinian origin, displaced 1948/1967).
- Minorities: Circassians, Chechens, Armenians, Bedouin tribes.
- Refugees: ~2.3M registered Palestine refugees (UNRWA) in Jordan—many citizens.
Jordan and the West Bank are separate political entities; the Jordan River is the internationally recognized boundary.
