Contrary to what some might assume, porcupines are not native to New York State. These distinctive rodents are primarily found in the western and central regions of North America, with their range extending into parts of Canada and northern Mexico.
The North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) prefers coniferous and mixed forest habitats across the western United States, including the Rocky Mountains, Pacific Northwest, and Great Basin regions. While their historical range may have been broader, they are not currently established in the northeastern states.
New York's wildlife includes many other fascinating mammals such as white-tailed deer, black bears, beavers, and various small rodents, but porcupines are not among them. Residents hoping to spot these quill-covered creatures would need to travel westward to their natural habitats.
