No Direct Boat Trips from New York to Maine

There are no scheduled passenger boat trips or ferries directly connecting New York City to Maine.

Why Not?

  • Distance: ~200 nautical miles (370 km) from NYC to Portland, ME—too far for conventional ferry.
  • Coastal Geography: Long Island Sound → Block Island Sound → Gulf of Maine requires open-ocean transit (rough, slow).
  • Demand: Driving (5 hrs), bus (6 hrs), train (Amtrak Downeaster from Boston, 3.5 hrs from Portland), or flying (1 hr) dominate.

Existing Water Services

  • NYC ↔ Long Island/Hamptons: Seasonal ferries (e.g., SeaStreak to East Hampton, Montauk).
  • NYC ↔ New England: No regular service. Past attempts (e.g., The Cat high-speed ferry Portland↔Yarmouth, NS) failed.
  • Cruises: NYC → Canada/New England cruises (7–14 nights) call at Bar Harbor/Portland, but not point-to-point transport.

Best Alternatives

  1. Drive: I-95 / Merritt Pkwy / I-91 / I-295. 5–6 hrs.
  2. Train: Amtrak Northeast Regional to Boston (4.5 hrs), transfer to Downeaster to Portland/Brunswick (2.5 hrs).
  3. Fly: LGA/JFK/EWR → PWM (Portland) / BGR (Bangor). 1h 15m + airport time.
  4. Bus: Concord Coach / Greyhound from Boston South Station or NYC Port Authority.
