How did New Jersey get its name?

New Jersey was named by Sir George Carteret after the Isle of Jersey, where he was born. Carteret was a prominent British Royalist during the English Civil War and was later appointed the first governor of the Province of New Jersey by King Charles II. The name "Jersey" is thought to be derived from the Old Norse word for "island" (eyrr).
