No official boundary exists, but common definitions:

• Geologic: Eastern edge of the Edwards Plateau (Balcones Escarpment) near San Angelo / Fort Stockton.
• Cultural/Economic: West of the I-35 corridor (San Antonio–Austin–Dallas line).
• Climatic: Where annual rainfall drops below ~20 inches (semi-arid).
• Cities included: Midland, Odessa, Abilene, Lubbock, Amarillo, El Paso, San Angelo.

Region features: Permian Basin oil, Llano Estacado (High Plains), Chihuahuan Desert (far west), Big Bend, Guadalupe Mountains.
