Panthers in Alabama: Myth vs. Reality

No Wild Panthers in Alabama

There are no wild panthers in Alabama. The only panther subspecies in the U.S. is the Florida panther, confined to Florida.

Reported Sightings

Occasional reports in Alabama have all been verified as either:

• Escaped or released exotic pets.
• Misidentifications of native large cats—primarily bobcats or mountain lions (cougars), though the latter are also extremely rare in Alabama.

Conservation authorities confirm no breeding population of panthers exists in the state.
