North Carolina's Native Wolf: The Red Wolf

The red wolf (Canis rufus) is the sole wolf species native to North Carolina. Once nearly extinct, a captive breeding program in the 1980s led to reintroduction at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. The population is now closely monitored for long-term survival.
