Harrisburg, Pennsylvania's capital, sits in the Piedmont physiographic province—a rolling plateau between the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the Appalachian Mountains.
The city itself is on relatively gentle, riverine terrain. The Appalachians begin just north of the metro area, providing recreation (Appalachian Trail crosses the river at Duncannon, 20 km upstream) but not enclosing the city.
