Oklahoma City Thunder: Relocation from Seattle SuperSonics

The Oklahoma City Thunder began as the Seattle SuperSonics (1967–2008).

The Move

  • Ownership Group: Clay Bennett / Professional Basketball Club LLC (purchased 2006).
  • Catalyst: Failure to secure public funding for a new arena (KeyArena replacement) in Seattle.
  • Legal Battle: City of Seattle sued to enforce lease at KeyArena (through 2010).
  • Settlement: July 2, 2008. Ownership paid **$45M** to city (+$30M if Seattle gets NHL/NBA team within 5 years). Lease terminated.
  • Relocation Approved: NBA Board of Governors (April 18, 2008).
  • First Season OKC: 2008–09.

Seattle SuperSonics Legacy

  • NBA Champions: **1979** (defeated Washington Bullets).
  • Hall of Famers: Lenny Wilkens, Jack Sikma, Dennis Johnson, Gus Williams, Nate McMillan, Gary Payton, Shawn Kemp, Ray Allen.
  • Retired Numbers: 1, 4, 10, 19, 24, 32, 43 (honored in OKC but belong to Seattle history).

Current Status

Seattle actively pursuing NBA return (expansion/relocation) — Climate Pledge Arena (renovated 2021) is NBA-ready. OKC retains Sonics' history/records per settlement.
