Where is the Mississippi floodplain located?
The Mississippi River floodplain is a broad, flat area of land that lies along the Mississippi River in the United States. It extends from Cairo, Illinois, at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, southward to the Gulf of Mexico. The floodplain is about 1,000 miles (1,600 km) long and ranges in width from about 50 miles (80 km) to 100 miles (160 km).
The Mississippi River floodplain is a major agricultural region, and it is also home to a variety of wildlife. The floodplain is prone to flooding, and it has been the site of some of the most devastating floods in American history, including the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927.
