Does Alabama Border the Great Lakes? No—Here's Why

Alabama does not border any of the five Great Lakes. The Great Lakes—Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario—form a chain along the U.S.–Canada border in the upper Midwest and Northeast, roughly 700–900 miles north of Alabama.

Alabama's Actual Water Boundaries

The Yellowhammer State's aquatic borders are distinctly southern:

  • Gulf of Mexico — 53 miles of coastline along the state's southern edge.
  • Tennessee River — Forms part of the northern border with Tennessee.
  • Chattahoochee River — Defines much of the eastern border with Georgia.
  • Perdido River — Marks the southeastern border with Florida.

Alabama's river systems (Mobile, Alabama, Tombigbee, Black Warrior) drain southward into the Gulf, not northward toward the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence basin. The continental divide separating these watersheds runs through northern Alabama.
