Fun Events in Brooklyn, NYC

The city of Brooklyn is one of the five boroughs of New York City and was established in 1896, but did not become part of New York City until 1898. The city of Brooklyn has become a cultural arts destination with an independent art scene and a strong architectural heritage. Brooklyn has year round activities for tourists and residents, ranging from holiday activities, concerts, and parades, to movies in the park.
  1. Brooklyn Concerts

    • The Brooklyn Seaside Summer Concert Series is a free outdoor concert series made available on Thursday nights and offers classic rock, pop, oldies, contemporary and Latin performers and musicians. The Seaside Summer Concert Series has been available for over 30 years, featuring performances from The Beach Boys, George Thorogood and The Destroyers, Aretha Franklin, John Legend and others.

    Movies

    • There is an outdoor movie series at McCarren Park hosted by L Magazine. Movies run from July 7 through Aug. 11 at no charge. Previous movie showings have included "Romeo and Juliet" and "Say Anything." Brooklyn Bridge's Park is also home to an outdoor movie festival, Movies with a View, on Thursday nights with movies like "Rear Window" and "Monsters vs. Aliens in 3D." The movie series is in its 12th year as of 2011 and provides a picturquesque area from which to view the film. The movie screenings are free of charge. The outdoor movie selection and movie festival provide education about film, the opportunity to learn more about film making, have Q&A sessions with directors, and also view movies.

    Holiday Activities

    • Whether you are in Brooklyn in July or for Christmas and New Year's, the holiday season in Brooklyn provides events for all ages, such as visiting the holiday markets and bazaars at Brooklyn Flea, the Smith Street Market, Arts Cetera and the Holiday Bazaar. The American Ballet Theater features the annual performance of the Nutcracker and you can also visit the holiday food competition at the Bell House or Brooklyn Lights and Cannoli Tour. If you celebrate Hanukah, you can go to the lighting of the Menorah at Grand Army Plaza on Dec. 1. For summer holidays, like the 4th of July, you can enjoy fireworks, a party at the Brooklyn Museum, parades or even Hot Dog Mania, a hot dog eating contest.

    Museums

    • Brooklyn is home to about seven museums, including art museums, historical societies, transit museums, and children's museums. The Brooklyn Museum offers a collection of Egyptian, classical, and Middle Eastern Art, European paintings, Asian and Islamic art, African art and other permanent exhibitions as well as rotating exhibits. The Brooklyn Children's Museum provides learning experiences for children and families, offering hands-on activities and role-playing, as well as the opportunity to learn about science, arts, culture, and the environment. The Jewish Children's Museum provides the opportunity to learn about Jewish culture, history, and values through hands-on programs.
