Early European Exploration of Georgia (US State)

The first Europeans to explore present-day Georgia were Spanish, led by Hernando de Soto in 1540, searching for gold. They encountered Native American tribes including the Cherokee, Creek, and Choctaw.

In the 17th century, English exploration began, culminating in James Oglethorpe founding the colony of Georgia in 1732 as a haven for debtors and a buffer against Spanish Florida. Early settlers faced conflict with Native tribes, harsh climate, and scarce resources, but the colony grew to become a key British possession by the late 18th century.
