Why were missiles sent to Cuba?
In response to the United States' deployment of nuclear missiles in Turkey and Italy, the Soviet Union sent missiles to Cuba in 1962. The Soviet Union viewed the missiles as a way to deter the United States from attacking Cuba and to improve its global military position. The United States saw the missiles as a major threat and responded by imposing a naval blockade on Cuba and threatening to invade the island if the missiles were not removed. The Cuban Missile Crisis was resolved peacefully after a series of negotiations between the United States and the Soviet Union, and the Soviet Union agreed to remove its missiles from Cuba in exchange for the United States removing its missiles from Turkey and Italy.
