Savannah was founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe, a British general and philanthropist, as the first permanent settlement of the Georgia colony. It quickly became the colony's political and economic center, as well as a major port city for trade and commerce. Savannah remains the capital city of the state of Georgia today.
