U.S. military presence in Hawaii began in the 19th century:

• 1872 – Treaty allows U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor.
• 1893 – U.S.-backed overthrow of Hawaiian Kingdom.
• 1898 – Formal annexation; Hawaii becomes U.S. territory.
• 1959 – Statehood (50th state).
