The Hawaiian-Emperor Seamount Chain: Count and Characteristics
Over 100 Submarine Volcanoes
The Hawaiian–Emperor seamount chain stretches ~6,200 km across the North Pacific. Current scientific estimates:
- Total seamounts (estimated): >129
- Definitively identified & cataloged: 109
- Active volcanoes (emergent): 4 (Kīlauea, Mauna Loa, Hualālai, Lōʻihi submarine)
- Atolls / islands (Northwestern Hawaiian Islands): 10+ (Midway, Kure, Pearl & Hermes, Lisianski, etc.)
Geodynamic Context
- Formed by Pacific Plate moving over a stationary mantle hotspot (~90 mm/yr NW).
- Sharp bend (~47 Ma) marks plate motion change (Emperor → Hawaiian trend).
- Age progression: oldest (Meiji, ~80 Ma) → youngest (Lōʻihi, active).
Research Value
Chain provides a pristine record of plate motion, mantle plume dynamics, and volcanic evolution. Protected as Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (UNESCO).
