What led to the unification of East and West Jersey?

In 1664 the Duke of York granted Berkeley and Carteret a parcel of land known as New Caesaria or Nwe Jersey, which was to be divided between them. Berkeley sold his half of the colony in 1674 to a group of Quakers including William Penn and Edward Byllynge, who divided the land into West Jersey and East Jersey. The proprietors of West Jersey sold much of their land cheaply to settlers, leading to a shortage of revenue and a lack of centralized authority. In 1682 the proprietors of East Jersey granted extensive powers to a governor, who then passed several unpopular laws, leading the proprietors to reassume control of the colony. In 1702 the proprietors of both East and West Jersey surrendered their charters to Queen Anne, who unified the two colonies under royal rule.
