When was California found?

The Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo is officially credited with the “discovery” of California when he anchored at San Diego Bay in 1542. Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés had first sighted present-day Baja California from ships in 1533 or 1534 and sent out several land and sea expeditions that explored further.
