Giant Kelp: California's Underwater Forests

The vast kelp forests off California are formed by giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera). Although often called algae, giant kelp is technically a brown seaweed in the order Laminariales. It grows rapidly in cold, nutrient-rich waters, creating towering underwater canopies that support rich marine ecosystems.
