Fiji Plants & Animals

Fiji is an island country in the South Pacific. Sitting less than 2,000 miles northeast of Australia, less than 1,500 miles north of New Zealand, and roughly 3,000 miles southwest of Hawaii, it is in the middle of the tropics. The plants and animals found in Fiji are typical of tropical environments.
  1. Geckos

    • Geckos are some of the most common animals on the Fijian islands. However, if you are looking for them in broad daylight, your chances of spotting one are small because they come out at night to feast on insects. Geckos are smaller than the size of the human hand. Several species of geckos are on the Fijian islands, including Gehrya oceanica, which has dark green scales and black stripes, and the Lepidodactylus lugubris, which has light green scales with black spots.

    Banded Sea Krait

    • This sea snake roams the waters around the Fijian islands and can be spotted by its black and white stripes. If you come in contact with this animal, keep your distance because it has venom with a poison level that rivals that of a cobra. While most species of this animal are not dangerous, the Hydrophis melanocephalus species of this animals is known to get aggressive with people. The Hydrophis melanocephalus can be spotted by its black forehead, while all other species of the banded sea krait have yellow foreheads.

    Crabs

    • Many types of crabs can be found on the Fijian islands. The hermit crab finds random objects to use for shells, and are known to crawl around at night. Another type, land crabs, only reside on land and only come out at night. Unlike hermit crabs, land crabs do not use shells and instead use holes, burrows and other carvings out the land. The fiddler crab sometimes splits its time between the ocean and land. These crabs can be spotted by their yellow exoskeletons.

    Mangroves

    • These trees inhabit the coastlines of the Fijian islands and rely on saltwater for their survival. They rise out of the seawater and can be found in clusters called mangrove swamps. These trees also have a complex root system, which is visible from underwater.

    Flowers and Fruits

    • Several species of flowers are on the Fijian islands. One species, orchids, are recognized by their long, yellow pedals. Hibiscus flowers, on the other hand, come in a variety of colors, but either way, they are characterized by their wide, fanlike pedals that surround the pollen of the flower. Bouganvillas are smaller flowers with smaller pedals that are usually found in groups. Some of the fruits found on the trees in Fiji include pineapples, bananas, papayas, soursaps, and coconuts.
