Chumash Nation in Santa Barbara: Clarifying the Bands

There is no "Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation" in Santa Barbara. The federally recognized Chumash tribe in the region is:

Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians

• Location: Near Santa Ynez town, midway between Santa Barbara and Santa Maria
• Land: ~1,400 acres (expanding via fee-to-trust)
• Population: ~300 enrolled members
• Government: Tribal Council; enterprises (Chumash Casino Resort, hotel, gas, wine)
• Federal recognition: 1901 (one of California's earliest)

• Barbareño/Ventureño Band (Santa Barbara/Ventura coastal)
• Northern Chumash (San Luis Obispo)
• Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation — unrecognized; based in Santa Barbara area

Key Distinction

Only Santa Ynez Band has federal recognition (sovereignty, trust land, gaming compact, BIA services). Other groups pursue recognition; some have state recognition only.
