The Great Barrier Reef stretches for approximately 2,300 kilometers (1,400 miles) along the coast of Queensland, Australia. It is the longest coral reef system in the world, stretching from the Torres Strait in the north to Lady Elliot Island in the south.
Area
The Great Barrier Reef covers an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometers (133,000 square miles). This makes it slightly larger than the size of Italy or the United Kingdom. The reef is also incredibly diverse, with over 1,500 species of fish, 400 species of corals, and 4,000 species of mollusks.
