Why Rhode Island Is Called the "Ocean State"

Rhode Island's nickname reflects its 400+ miles of coastline—the highest coastline-to-area ratio of any US state. Despite being the smallest state, its jagged shore (Narragansett Bay, islands, salt marshes, beaches) gives it outsized maritime character.
