How to Join Scotland Yard (Metropolitan Police) as a Detective Constable
"Scotland Yard" is the metonym for the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS)—London's police force. Becoming a Detective Constable (DC) is a competitive, multi-stage process. Here are the current requirements and pathway (2024).
Eligibility: Minimum Requirements

Recruitment Pathways (2024)
1. Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) — Most Common
- 3-year apprenticeship + BSc Professional Policing Practice.
- Earn while you learn (~£33,500+ start, rising to ~£43,000).
- Apply via met.police.uk/careers.
- After 2+ years as PC, apply for Detective pathway (see below).
2. Degree Holder Entry Programme (DHEP)
- 2-year work-based + Graduate Diploma in Professional Policing.
- For those with any bachelor's degree (2:2+).
- Same salary progression.
3. Pre-Join Degree in Professional Policing
- Self-funded 3-year BSc at approved uni → apply within 5 years.
- Shorter on-the-job training.
4. Detective Constable Direct Entry (DC DE) — Currently Paused/Intermittent
- Direct entry to detective role (no uniform PC phase).
- Requires degree + relevant investigative experience (often prior law enforcement, investigative roles).

From PC to Detective Constable: The Path
- Complete probation (2 years PCDA / DHEP) → confirmed Police Constable.
- Gain operational experience (response, neighbourhood, CID attachment).
- Apply for Detective Development Programme (internal competition).
- Pass National Investigators' Exam (NIE) — law & procedure.
- Complete Professionalising Investigation Programme (PIP) Level 2.
- Achieve PIP2 accreditation → substantive Detective Constable.
