Are Locks Unique to England?
Absolutely not. Locks—mechanical devices for securing doors, chests, gates—have been used worldwide for millennia:
- Ancient Egypt: Wooden pin-tumbler locks (~2000 BCE).
- Mesopotamia: Similar early mechanisms.
- China: Warded locks, combination locks (Han Dynasty).
- Rome: Iron locks, keys as status symbols.
- Medieval Europe: Widespread; English locksmiths (Bramah, Chubb, Yale) later pioneered modern cylinder locks.
- Islamic World: Advanced lock designs described by al-Jazari (1206).
England contributed key innovations (lever tumbler, pin tumbler) during the Industrial Revolution, but locks are a universal technology.
