New York was founded in 1624 by Dutch colonists who built a trading post on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. The post was called New Amsterdam and it quickly became a major center of trade in the region. In 1664, the English captured New Amsterdam and renamed it New York in honor of the Duke of York.
