World Trade Center vs. Twin Towers: Understanding the Difference

The World Trade Center (WTC) was a complex of seven buildings in Lower Manhattan's Financial District. The Twin Towers (1 WTC and 2 WTC) were the two iconic 110-story skyscrapers that formed the centerpiece of that complex.

The original WTC (1973–2001) included:

  • Twin Towers (North & South)
  • 3 WTC (Marriott Hotel)
  • 4, 5, 6 WTC (low-rise office buildings)
  • 7 WTC (47-story office building)
  • Underground mall, transit hub, and plaza

All were destroyed in the September 11, 2001 attacks. The rebuilt WTC now includes One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower), 3, 4, and 7 WTC, the Oculus transit hub, and the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
